Owning a home in Lake Ronkonkoma can come with a lot of work. Houses in Suffolk often need many kinds of repairs. This is very true of electrical repairs and maintenance. Making sure your home is up to code and safe is incredibly important. If you are unsure of whether or not your home may need electrical services, read on! Popkin Electric, one of the top Suffolk County electrical companies, has compiled a list of these 6 warning signs of electrical hazards.
Always Changing Light Bulbs
Been going through a lot of light bulbs lately? If so, you might have an unhealthy electrical system on your hands. If you notice a lot of your bulbs are emitting low or dim light, while others remain bright, you may need to repair your system. It is probably time that you call an electrical contractor in Lake Ronkonkoma to come take a look at what’s going on.
Flickering and Dimming Lights
It’s not totally uncommon for lights to dim or flicker, especially when they share a circuit with a major appliance. It is fairly common in older homes. If you notice a higher frequency of dimming and flickering, however, it may be time to call one of our professional Suffolk County electricians. If your light bulbs are looking like a scene in a horror film, you don’t want to waste time!
Switches and Outlets Stop Working
Have any of your outlets or light switches stopped working completely? This could be simply a blown fuse. But if that’s been ruled out, you may need to call in one of our commercial contractors to assess the situation. Your circuit line could be damaged by something like repeatedly slamming doors or too many appliances plugged in at once. Let us take a look!
Repeatedly Blowing Fuses
When you realize you have a blown fuse or a bad circuit breaker, it can be a minor inconvenience. It shouldn’t happen very often, but if it is starting to, you may have a serious electrical issue. This is a strong indication that you have overloaded circuits and you need to call in a professional electrician from Suffolk County. Be sure that you are only using the right size and type of fuses for your fuse box.
Electrical Outlets that Have Burned Out
Frequently used electrical outlets can get worn out over the years. This is pretty common in houses in Lake Ronkonkoma. This can present some serious issues. If a plug isn’t holding in the outlet, or you need to jiggle the plug out of it, it is probably time to replace it. If this is happening to you, call one of our electrical professionals in Lake Ronkonkoma right away. Burned out outlets can cause serious injuries or fires.
Burning Smells and Seeing Sparks
If you think there is a burning smell coming from an outlet or light switch you should definitely not ignore it. Contact a professional in Suffolk County immediately. Sometimes blue sparks are common, but if it is happening repeatedly you need to contact an electrician. Either of these issues can be an indication of overheated wires and could likely start a fire.

Lake Ronkonkoma is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 20,155 at the 2010 census.
The actual lake, Lake Ronkonkoma, adjacent to the CDP, is the largest lake on Long Island. The land surrounding one side of the lake is in the jurisdiction of the Town of Islip. The elevation of the lake surface is given as 55 feet (17 m) on the most recent USGS map, but as the lake is a “groundwater lake”, not fed by streams, it has no surface outlet and its water surface reflects the current level of the local water table. This can undergo significant changes over time, and the lake level experiences slow periods of rise and fall. In the late 1960s it was quite low; after several intermediate changes in level, in 2007 the lake was higher than at any time since, with a difference of well over 5 feet (1.5 m) between the 1960s low and the 2007 high.
As a result of the lake’s existence, Lake Ronkonkoma was once a resort town, until the area experienced a population explosion in the mid-20th century. Remnants of old resorts and hotels can still be seen around the lake’s shores. Many summer cottages and bungalows from that period remain, now converted to year-round use.
The lake is the subject of a number of urban legends, mainly rooted in the area’s rich Native American heritage. For example: 1. “It’s bottomless” (and/or empties into Long Island Sound or other waterways). In fact, the lake is relatively deep (approx. 65 feet (20 m)) at its southeastern side, and is what’s known as a kettle hole lake. 2. “Every year the lake sacrifices someone.” Or more specifically, Princess Ronkonkoma “The Lady of the Lake” calls young men out to the middle of the lake and drowns them. In all versions, the lady is an Indian princess who herself drowned in the lake, for reasons that vary depending on the story. The most popular version is that every year the lake claims one male victim. Articles suggest that in the past 200 years, only a handful of females have drowned in Lake Ronkonkoma. 3. “There is a mysterious rise and fall of the lake that doesn’t have any noticeable relationship to local rainfall totals.” This has not been sufficiently explained either way.
