Are you one of the many people who like to tackle jobs at your Poquott home on your own? Are you a tried and true “do it yourself home renovator”? Many do-it-yourself home renovators are unafraid to take up a hammer and saw, but run the other direction when it comes to electrical repairs. Yet doing your own electrical work can be a thankfully clean task. Although a do-it-yourself approach is not for everyone, there are some basic electrical projects that you can accomplish easily without a Suffolk electrical contractor. Why would you want to consider doing some of your own electrical work? Popkin Electric, one of the leading Suffolk electrical companies, has provided a list of 5 things to consider if you think you can tackle some basic electrical jobs all by yourself.
It is easy to find people to work on your car or repaint your house. Finding the right electrician in Suffolk for your electrical services may not be so simple. Along with plumbers, a good electrician, especially one who has time to take on contract work for a do it yourself renovator, can be hard to find. However, when you do need a good electrician, the staff at Popkin Electric prides itself on being readily available any day of the week.
A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned
If you’re intent on saving money on remodeling costs, the first place to start is with highly-skilled trades like electricians. The downside of this, of course, is that “highly skilled” will come back to haunt you. There is a learning curve associated with electrical work in Suffolk that you don’t find in something like demolition work. While electrical work can often be pricey, that is because it is intricate. If the job you need done in Poquott is simple, maybe you can try saving a few bucks by doing it on your own. However, sometimes it is worth your time and money to hire a Suffolk electrician to take care of some more complicated electrical jobs.
Not as Messy as Construction
Compared to drywall installation or demolition, or really any other type of renovation work, electrical work is clean. You get to work in a very neat environment for the most part, unless you are in a crawlspace or attic. However, be mindful of the size of the job. Sometimes you will find yourself having to locate hard to find wiring. When it comes to an intricate worksite, you may want to consult some commercial contractors near Suffolk County.
Logical and Scientific Methods
There really isn’t a trial and error method when it comes to electrical work. All of it is based on tried and true rules and methods. You have books and tables to guide you along, and if something isn’t working, there is a very real reason why it isn’t working. It is important that you never improvise your electrical work. You must never do any duct-taping, construction gluing, tweaking, or fudging of electrical work. So, if you are a rule follower, electrical work might just be for you. It is important to note that you must always follow the rules exactly. If you are not one to follow instructions specifically, electric work may not be your calling. If you find it to be a complicated matter, the job might be best left in the hands of one of our skilled professionals.
Many do it yourself Poquott home renovators are put off by the idea of probing in the electrical service panel and installing new circuits. Yes, contact with the frayed wires within the service panel is a very serious business. But service panel work is only one aspect of electrical work. The heavy lifting of running new circuits can be done safely by do-it-yourself renovators, and if they so choose, they can hire an electrician for that last job of connecting to the service panel. Or better yet, get educated on the service panel and you can safely do the work yourself.
If you feel that you want to take a shot in the dark and try some of your own electrical work, it is best to start small. Starting with safe projects is wise. If the job requires major rewiring or deals with potentially unsafe wires, know that the team at Popkin Electric, one of the top Electricians in Suffolk County,is available to help you repair what you need to. Call us anytime to discuss your electrical repair needs.
Poquott is a village in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. The village is located in the Town of Brookhaven, on the North Shore of Long Island, and is officially known as the Incorporated Village of Poquott.
Poquott was founded by European settlers in 1659. The peninsula came to be known as “George’s Neck”, and was developed mostly as farmland. A fort with a single 32-pound gun, dubbed “Fort Nonsense”, was erected at the tip of Poquott during the War of 1812. It did little to deter the British raiders who entered Port Jefferson Harbor.
As the 20th century approached, “California Grove” was established at what is now the foot of Washington Street (1883). California Grove was an amusement park that featured an oyster restaurant, dancing pavilion, skating rink, picnic grounds, and a pier at which the steamboat Notowantuc would unload tourists from Connecticut. The establishment of California Grove led to Poquott’s development as a summer bungalow community.
Poquott continued to grow as a summer community. Several camps (Dr. Petit’s Camp/Camp Woodbine/Pine Bluff Camp) dotted the shorelines of Poquott. At the turn of the century, large swaths of George’s Neck came into the hands of world traveler, financier, and businessman Edward Larocque Tinker. The Tinker family built several stunning homes throughout Poquott.
