Different Types of Outlets for Your Home

There are many different types of outlets that can be installed in your home and they all have different beneficial features. It is important to make sure that your home is equipped with the right outlets for your electrical needs. When switching types of outlets, it is essential to call a licensed electrician to make sure the job is done correctly and safely. Here is a list of some of the common types of outlets that you can install in your home.

GFCI OUTLETS

These outlets are usually found near water sources; typically in the kitchen or bathroom. This is because a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet will quickly shut off power to that outlet if there is a circuit short to protect from electrical shock. Although a bit more expensive than a standard outlet, these outlets are a safety precaution and are very important to have installed in your home.

15A OUTLETS

These are the standard outlets found mostly everywhere. They are equipped to handle up to 15 amps of power. These are the most easily recognizable outlets with the 3 prongs – 2 vertical slots and 1 rounder u-shaped slot on the bottom.

20A OUTLETS

These outlets look very similar to the standard outlets but are differentiated by a notch added onto the left side prong opening. These outlets are equipped to handle 20 amps of power while most standard outlets are only equipped for 15 amps. It is a good idea to use 20 amp outlets in areas where devices or appliances that use a lot of power are located. It is important to note that a 20A outlet can’t just simply replace a 15A outlet due to the use of thicker wires used for a 20A outlet. That being said, a licensed electrician will be needed to make this switch.

USB OUTLETS

There are a lot of versions of USB outlets but they all serve the same purpose. With most of our electronics having USB chargers, it is nice to have the ability to plug the USB right into the outlet rather than plugging in the whole charging block. Some of these USB outlets still have two regular outlet openings as well as two USB ports to make the outlet more versatile.

SMART OUTLETS

Smart outlets give you the ability to wirelessly control the outlet from your smartphone or other smart devices while saving electricity and keeping your home safe. If you remember once you get to work that you left your curling iron on, if it is plugged into a smart outlet, you can switch it off using your smartphone!

SWITCH OUTLET COMBO

These outlets are equipped with one outlet opening and one switch that controls that outlet. This is beneficial for when you have a device plugged into an outlet but don’t use that device all the time. With this outlet, you can just flip the switch when you want to turn it on or off.
