How to Protect Your Home from Power Surges in Nassau County
Introduction: Ah, power surges—those pesky, unpredictable bursts of electricity that can turn your home appliances into toast. If you live in Nassau
One of the most important electrical fixtures in our homes is the smoke alarm – making sure that these are always working properly is very important. Standard battery operated smoke alarms are becoming less reliable making them an unsafe option for your home. In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate, almost half (46%) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries and dead batteries caused one-quarter (24%) of the smoke alarm failures. These battery related faults can be avoided by having an electrician install hardwired smoke alarms throughout your home.
Hardwired smoke alarms are much safer than the standard battery operated detectors. Battery operated detectors are not as strong and long lasting as a hardwired detector. A hardwired smoke alarm will be more dependable and does not run the risk of faulty batteries. Battery operated detectors may have faulty or dead batteries making them useless and dangerous in the case of a fire. A hardwired alarm will always be functional and most have backup batteries if anything were ever to happen to the hardwiring.
A battery operated smoke alarm is a single unit that does not have the ability to be connected to other alarms throughout your home. A hardwired smoke alarm does have the ability to be connected to other smoke detectors throughout your home to ensure that if one alarm goes off, they all will. This allows you to be aware if there is a fire on the other side of the house for extra safety and will ensure enough time to evacuate and alert the fire department.
Having hardwired smoke detectors is part of the electrical code in many states so if your home still has battery operated alarms, depending on your state, your home may not be up to code. This could cause problems during inspections and could lead to added costs in the long run.
In many states it is also included in the electrical code that a hardwired smoke detector must be installed by a qualified electrician. Do not try to do hardwiring in your home by yourself; call an electrician to have these detectors installed safely. A DIY installation job can result in injury and wasted time. By having an electrician install your detectors, you can ensure it will be installed safely, properly, and quickly so that the detectors are protecting your home as soon as possible.
